Hon. Alice Muthoni Wahome is a Member of Parliament for Kandara Constituency. She was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. She is often described as a human rights defender, hardline politician, brilliant lawyer, and hardworking leader. Her fearless nature has often seen her at the forefront in promoting women’s leadership. She made her debut in politics in 1997 under the Kenya Women’s Caucus. Vied for the first time for Kandara constituency in 2002 and 2007 before clinching the seat in 2013.
In 2007, Alice Wahome plunged into national political terrain by vying for the parliamentary seat in Kandara Constituency on a NARC Kenya ticket but she lost. She contested once again in 2013 and won, making her one amongst 16 women who defied the gender barriers to be elected as Members of Parliament against 274 men. She proved her critics wrong by being re-elected in 2017 on a Jubilee party ticket, a position she holds to date.
Alice Wahome’s rise to the echelons of leadership started when she was still a young girl, but her star started shining between 1991 and 2001 when she was deeply involved in the women’s movement. It was a passion that saw her join the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) on whose council she was elected as a Vice-chairperson. Her leadership acumen was also witnessed when she served as a council member at the Law Society of Kenya council for two years. She has been a Vice-Chairperson of the Centre for Multi-party Democracy.
As a Member of Parliament, she has been credited with uplifting her constituents through a number of pillars:
