What We Do.

DTF Thematic Areas and Achievements

DTF’s has a strong track record in electoral and governance, evidence-based advocacy, inclusive programming and grassroots engagement positions it well to contribute implement interventions at the grassroots level. In Electoral and Governance area, DTF has undertaken extensive work in the country in line with its thematic expertise as outlined:

01 PARTICIPATORY FUND

Thematic Area 1: Establishment of a Participatory Fund

Kenya’s campaign financing costs have been ranked among the highest globally. This disproportionately disadvantages women, as they have less access to financial resources making it significantly harder for them to compete and win elective positions. In an effort to address this gap, DTF established a participatory fund to support women build their financial kitty to offset campaign related costs by creating a culture of saving among women candidates.

The Fund was established in line with the enabling legal operational frameworks, and borrowing from existing models such as EMILY’s List (Early Money is Like Yeast) and WISH List in the USA, World International Network (WINWIN) in Japan, Judy LaMarsh Fund in Canada.

02 CAMPAIGN EDUCATION

Thematic Area 2: Provision of Campaign Education and Capacity Building

DTF has heavily invested in nationwide capacity building shaping its Campaign education and capacity building of women aspirants and women leaders through two models i.e. The Running to Win Training Model and Provision of Publicity and Visibility for Women leaders. The Running To Win model provides women with essential knowledge of electoral processes, including party nominations, candidate registration, and campaign conduct, empowering them to navigate the electoral period effectively.

Key initiatives under this include:

  • Running to Win Training Curriculum
    DTF streamlined and harmonized campaign and political education by developing and operationalizing the “Running to Win: Women’s Pathway to a Successful Training Manual,” and Facilitator’s Guide; a comprehensive national curriculum for training women political leaders. DTF has trained over 3000 women through its Running to Win Monthly Women Aspirants Trainings. The facilitators guide has been instrumental in Training of Trainers (TOT) a model used to build local capacities and resources for Women leadership from grassroots level.
  • Gender Justice Awards
    In 2024, DTF launched and presented Five Gender Justice Awards to five women trailblazers for their exceptional leadership and trailblazing efforts in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment. In 2025, the Gender Justice Award was presented to Hon. Lady Justice Martha Koome, Kenya’s first female Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya.
  • Chagua Mama Podcasts
    In 2024, DTF, in partnership with ENAF and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) launched the “Chagua Mama – Ni Tyme ya Mama” podcast series aimed to increase the visibility of women leaders, especially Women (MCAs) across Kenya. The series highlighted the political journeys, achievements, and challenges. To date, DTF has produced and distributed 14 podcasts featuring 12 women leaders from various counties.
  • Publication of Women Changing the Way the World Works – Volume 1, 2018, Volume 2, 2024, and Volume 3, 2025
    DTF continues to enhance the visibility of women leaders through the publication which highlights the significant contributions and impact of women in various spheres.

03 ADVOCACY & RESEARCH

Thematic Area 3: Advocacy, Lobbying, Research and Documentation

DTF has strongly invested in creating favorable legislative environment to support women in leadership, governance and elective politics. In line with this, DTF has undertaken tremendous research, and analysis of the status of women in leadership and documented this information for access and use in advancing women leadership in the country. Key of these initiatives include:

  • Research and Documentation
    Since 2021, DTF has produced the following publications: The Status of Women in Political Leadership; 2021, The Checklist for Participation in Elective Positions; 2022, ‘Chagua Mama: Why Electing Women Matters,’ 2022, Gender Audit & Analysis of Kenya’s 2022 General Elections, and Strategic Road Map for Increasing the Number of Elected Women Members of County Assembly (MCA) From 115 To 750, 2024.
  • Lobbying and Advocacy for Electoral and Legal Reform Initiatives on Women Leadership
    In an effort to create a favorable legal and policy environment for increased women participation in leadership and governance, DTF has lobbied and advocated for the formulation or amendment of various laws and policies at the national and county levels. At the National level DTF has significantly worked with women to give their voices through submission of memoranda on the Political Parties Bill (Amendment) 2022, Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Election Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
  • County Level Policies
    At the County level, DTF has supported various counties in the development of Gender responsive policies including development and adoption of five policies, including Gender Mainstreaming, Disability Mainstreaming, and Child Protection Policies (2024), in Bungoma County and Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Child Protection Policies in Vihiga County.
  • ASAL Region Policy Briefs
    In 2025, DTF supported the development of 8 policy briefs on Gender Mainstreaming and Disability inclusion in Garissa, Tana River, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana and Wajir Counties which make up Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) Region through ENAF’s Kuza Jamii Project.
  • Capacity Strengthening
    DTF has also conducted capacity strengthening initiatives to women leaders from Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori Counties with support from Hanns Seidel Foundation and Virtual trainings bringing together women leaders from across the 47 Counties.

04 RESOURCE MOBILIZATION

Thematic Area 4: Resource Mobilization

Democracy Trust Fund mobilizes resources through collaborations and partnerships with other institutions/organizations that are aligned with its vision and mission to create a better environment for resource mobilization.

05 INSTITUTIONAL GROWTH

Thematic Area 5: Institutional Capacity Building and Growth

To ensure that institution grow in various dimensions such as governance, institution expansion, increase in number of talented, skilled and qualified staff as well as increase in number of partners.
