There’s a growing body of literature that has demonstrated that gender equality is not only good
for social development but that it is smart economics. The World Development Report 2012
on Gender Equality and Development (WDR 2012) argued that Gender equality can enhance
productivity, improve development outcomes and make institutions more representative of
the total population. Empowering women as economic, political, and social actors can change
policy choices and make institutions more representative of a range of voices.
