Day Two | County Assemblies Women Caucus Workshop Day Two | County Assemblies Women Caucus Workshop

Day Two of the County Assemblies Women Caucus Workshop at Semara Hotel, Machakos County, focused on advancing women's representation and strengthening electoral preparedness ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

During the session, Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) Executive Director Ms. Juliana Kiio delivered a presentation on strategies for enhancing women's competitiveness and success in the 2027 General Elections, drawing from the County Assembly 750 (CA 750) Strategy.

The session highlighted practical and strategic actions that women leaders and aspirants can undertake to strengthen their electoral preparedness, including early political positioning, effective engagement with political parties, understanding electoral laws and IEBC processes, building grassroots support structures, strategic communication, and navigating nomination processes.

The discussion further emphasized the importance of sustained investment in women’s leadership at the county level, recognizing counties as critical platforms for nurturing the next generation of national leaders.

As Kenya moves towards the 2027 General Elections, strengthening the capacity, visibility, and preparedness of women leaders remains central to achieving inclusive governance and increased representation in elective leadership.

The forum provided an important platform to reflect on the growing impact of online harassment, cyberbullying, disinformation, deepfakes, cyberstalking, and other forms of TFGBV that disproportionately affect women and girls.

As an institution committed to advancing women's leadership and political participation, DTF through the Running to Win Programme equips women aspirants and leaders with practical skills on digital safety, online campaigning, electoral violence prevention, and TFGBV. As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Elections, protecting women from online violence is critical to safeguarding democracy, strengthening civic participation, and ensuring that women's voices continue to shape leadership and decision-making processes.

The convening, themed "Early Preparedness and Coordination to Advance Women’s Political Participation Ahead of the 2027 General Elections," brought together women’s rights organizations, feminist leaders, activists, development partners, and governance actors to reflect on lessons from previous electoral cycles and identify priority actions for the 2026–2027 electoral period.

Discussions centred on strengthening women’s political leadership, addressing electoral violence and technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), enhancing the inclusion of young women and women with disabilities, and building collective strategies to support women aspirants and candidates.

A key call to action emerging from the convening is the need to harmonize efforts, resources, and advocacy initiatives across stakeholders to ensure coordinated, impactful, and sustainable support for women’s political participation and leadership.

Today, ENAF and DTF in partnership with HSF throug Today, ENAF and DTF in partnership with HSF through the Safeguarding Gender Gains 2026 Program, are convening a National Gender Champions Training bringing together 47 champions, one from each county, to strengthen their capacities as county-level entry points for creating a pool of women leaders available for election, nomination& appointments as well as advancing gender-responsive electoral processes in preparation for the 2027 General Elections.

With only 14 months to the 2027 General Elections, the forum provides a platform to reflect on the most viable approaches for mapping, mentoring and positioning women aspirants to expand the pipeline.

Evidence demonstrates that if more women come out in large numbers to vie for various elective seats, sail through the nominations and are present on the ballot, then more women are likely to be elected in the 2027 General Elections. Currently, the success rate for women elected in the 2022 General Elections was 10 % with only 201 women being elected from the 1,999 who were on the ballot.

The forum has also enhanced the Gender Champions’ understanding of electoral laws, principles, and ongoing reforms, and their implications on women’s political participation and leadership at the county level which will seek to ensure that women aspirants at the grassroot level are well informed and do not get rigged out due to information gap.
