290 days to the 2027 General Elections. 🇰🇪

The women who win in 2027 are not the ones who start in 2027. They are the ones who start now, while there is still time to learn the rules, build the base and be seen.

With 290 days to go, women aspirants and leaders should be doing these things:

✅ Check your registration: Confirm your voter status and update your details. Help five other women do the same.
✅ Know the rules: Read the electoral laws, party nomination requirements and timelines, including the two-thirds gender principle.
✅ Choose your seat and your party: Decide what you are running for and understand how your party picks its candidates, before the nomination window opens.
✅ Build your team: Find a campaign manager, a finance lead, a communications lead and a circle of mentors and allies.
✅ Plan your resources: Draw up a realistic budget and a fundraising plan, and learn the spending rules.
✅ Get known where it counts: Show up consistently in community forums, women's groups, faith spaces and party meetings.
✅ Stay safe, online and offline: Plan for harassment and online abuse, document incidents and know where to report them.

Preparation is not something you finish in the last month. It is built day by day, starting now.

At Democracy Trust Fund (DTF), we continue to support women leaders and aspirants through our Running to Win programme, civic and electoral education, mentorship and strategic partnerships.

Prepare early. Be on the table. Get informed.

Which of these will you tackle this week? Tell us in the comments. 👇

The journey to 2027 is already underway, how are you preparing to participate?

As Kenya moves closer to the 2027 General Elections, the next 298 days present an important opportunity for women and young people to prepare, organize, engage and contribute to shaping the country's democratic future.
Meaningful political participation does not begin on Election Day. It starts with informed decisions, active civic engagement, leadership development and understanding democratic processes.

What should women and young people be doing now?
✅ Familiarize yourself with electoral laws, voter registration requirements and political party processes.
✅ Seek opportunities for civic education, leadership training, mentorship and networking.
✅ Participate in public consultations, policy discussions, community forums and political party activities.
✅ Understand nomination requirements, develop clear leadership priorities and build meaningful community connections.
✅ Challenge misinformation, reject political violence and encourage respectful dialogue and accountability.

At Democracy Trust Fund (DTF), we continue to support women leaders and aspirants through our Running to Win programme, civic and electoral education, mentorship and strategic partnerships. Meaningful leadership is built through consistent preparation and engagement.

#KATIBA@16 | REFLECTING ON OUR CONSTITUTIONAL JOUR

#KATIBA@16 | REFLECTING ON OUR CONSTITUTIONAL JOURNEY

Today, Democracy Trust Fund joins fellow civil society and democracy actors, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission and many others, in marking 16 years since the promulgation of Kenya’s Constitution.

Katiba @16 is a period to reflect on how far we have come as a country, the progress made in strengthening constitutionalism, democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation, while also acknowledging the bottlenecks that continue to hold us back.

For us at DTF, our reflection centres on inclusive governance and the milestones made towards equality for all. The Constitution gave Kenyans a powerful framework for participation, representation, devolution, access to rights and greater inclusion.

Over the past 16 years, we have seen important steps forward, but the promise of the Constitution is still a work in progress. The Two-Thirds Gender Rule remains an important part of this conversation. Sixteen years on, we must continue asking: Are women equally represented in the spaces where decisions are made?

As we look towards the 2027 General Elections, we must continue asking: Who is included? Whose voice is heard? And how do we ensure that governance works for every Kenyan?

Today, we celebrate the gains, confront the gaps and renew our collective commitment to a Kenya where everyone can participate, be heard and enjoy equal rights and opportunities. The people remain at the centre of Kenya’s democratic journey.

Today, Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) joins the world

Today, Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) joins the world in celebrating International Youth Day and appreciating the important role young people—both young women and young men—continue to play in shaping development and governance globally.

Locally, we celebrate the young people who are taking the lead in driving difficult conversations, challenging the status quo and contributing to the governance of our country.

As we move closer to 2027, we encourage more young people, especially young women, to step forward, build their leadership capacities and position themselves to take up leadership opportunities at all levels across the country.

Your voice matters. Your leadership matters. Your time is now.

Young Leaders. Stronger Democracy.

Yesterday, DTF had the pleasure of hosting Hon. Tiyah Galgalo at our offices for a meaningful exchange on leadership, democracy and women’s political participation especially for Isiolo County .

As the first Woman Representative of Isiolo County, Hon. Tiyah has continued to grow her political and leadership journey and is currently working as a Comissioner at Kenya Land Commission. As she develops her new political ambitions in Isiolo County, we were pleased to engage in substantive discussions and share perspectives that contribute to shaping her leadership discourse.

At DTF, we remain committed to supporting women across the country, including those navigating political spaces where negotiated democracy continues to affect women’s participation and leadership.

We believe in building bridges, sharing perspectives and creating opportunities for women to lead.

Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) is participating in the Women’s Rights Organizations (WROs) Convening on Early Preparedness and Coordination for the 2027 General Elections, taking place from today 6th - 7th August 2026 at Park Inn by Radisson Hotel, Nairobi, convened by @CRAWN Trust.

As Kenya approaches the 2027 General Elections, the convening provides an important platform for WROs and electoral stakeholders to reflect on the evolving political and electoral context, identify priority areas for collective action, and strengthen coordination in supporting women’s meaningful political participation.

The discussions will inform the development of a joint 2026–2027 Roadmap and Coordination Mechanism, leveraging the strengths of different WROs to advance more strategic and coordinated support for women throughout the electoral cycle.

DTF remains committed to working collaboratively with WROs and other stakeholders to strengthen the pipeline of women leaders and contribute towards more women effectively participating, competing and winning in the 2027 General Elections.

On 3rd and 4th August 2026, Echo Network Africa Foundation (ENAF) and Democracy Trust Fund (DTF), in partnership with UN Women East and Southern Africa Regional Office, conducted an evaluation mission in Bungoma County under the Ireland-funded Preserving and Expanding Gender Gains Programme implemented in Bungoma and Vihiga Counties from 2023–2025 with support from UN Women Kenya Country Office (KCO).

The mission forms part of the UN Women Kenya Country Office evaluation of the outgoing 2023–2026 Strategic Note and is intended to inform investment priorities for the 2027–2029 Strategic Note. The evaluation engaged county leadership, including H.E. Pst. Janepher Mbatiany, Deputy Governor of Bungoma County; Mr. Benedict Emachar, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Youth, Culture and Sports; county gender department leadership; select Members of the County Assembly; and community beneficiaries through Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs).

The evaluation reviewed programme achievements, lessons learned, and opportunities for strengthening women’s leadership and gender-responsive governance. Key gains highlighted included the development and adoption of the Bungoma County Women’s Manifesto, the adoption of gender, child protection, and disability policies, the strengthening of women’s leadership structures, and the expansion of grassroots training and mentorship for women leaders in preparation for the 2027 General Elections.

The findings will contribute to the design of UN Women’s 2027–2029 Strategic Note and guide future county actions to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The forum brings together over 70 representatives from state and non-state institutions, including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC), the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), political parties, security agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), Women’s Rights Organizations (WROs), and other stakeholders within the electoral governance ecosystem.

The forum seeks to respond to the persistent barriers that continue to limit women’s political participation, the gaps in the implementation and enforcement of electoral laws and policies, and the need to develop practical recommendations that can strengthen gender-responsive electoral governance ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The forum aims to strengthen a more coordinated electoral ecosystem that advances inclusion, accountability, and collaboration among key stakeholders. By translating dialogue into practical action, it seeks to help create the conditions for more women to participate, contest, and lead as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Elections.
