Yesterday, the Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) joined government representatives, development partners, civil society and private sector stakeholders at the National Gender Sector Working Group (GSWG) meeting, convened by State Department for Gender at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi. The meeting provided an important platform for stakeholders to review progress, strengthen partnerships and identify collective actions towards advancing gender equality in Kenya.

The meeting featured remarks from CS Hanna Cheptumo, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services; PS Anne Wang'ombe, CBS, Principal Secretary, State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action; Amb. Joshua Tabah, Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya; Ms. Antonia N’gabala Sodonon, UN Women Country Representative; and representatives from government, development partners and civil society.

Key discussions focused on:
✅ Updates from sub-committees on Women, Peace and Security; women's leadership and decision-making; gender-based violence; social economic empowerment; male engagement and inclusion; and gender, climate change and disaster risk reduction.
✅ The status of the Gender Bill and preparations for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
✅ Election preparedness for women and Special Interest Groups, bringing together key electoral and governance institutions, including ORPP, NGEC, NPS and WROs.

As Kenya moves towards the 2027 General Election, these conversations reinforce the need for coordinated action to address structural barriers, electoral violence and gender-based discrimination, while creating safer and more inclusive pathways for women's political participation and leadership.
DTF remains committed to strengthening partnerships and supporting women leaders and aspirants to participate meaningfully in democratic processes and decision-making.

"The register opens the door, the nomination decides who enters, and the ballot decides who stays" - Hon. Rehema Dida Jaldesa, Chairperson of the National Gender and Equality Commission.

Together, we can turn commitments on gender equality into measurable action.

WOMEN CALL FOR ELECTORAL REFORMS THAT SAFEGUARD TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY AND INCLUSION

We, the women leaders, aspirants, DTF Members and Women Peace Actors from across Kenya, raise concerns over the Elections (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2024, passed with amendments by the National Assembly on 22 October 2026 and referred to the Senate for further consideration.

Our concerns relate to the proposed changes affecting IEBC's role in political party primaries, electoral dispute resolution, voter registration, public scrutiny of the voters' register, election results transparency and compliance with constitutional gender representation requirements.

Our Call: We call upon Parliament, IEBC, ORPP and political parties to safeguard credible and inclusive nominations, clarify institutional mandates, strengthen access to electoral justice, protect transparency in election results management and ensure compliance with constitutional gender representation requirements.

Electoral reforms must strengthen institutional accountability and safeguard the political rights of women and other underrepresented groups ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

WOMEN DEMAND ZERO TOLERANCE FOR ELECTORAL VIOLENCE

WOMEN DEMAND ZERO TOLERANCE FOR ELECTORAL VIOLENCE AND GENDER-BASED POLITICAL INTIMIDATION

We, the women leaders, aspirants, DTF Members and Women Peace Actors from across Kenya, express serious concern over reported incidents of electoral violence, intimidation, harassment and discriminatory political conduct targeting women ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The incidents cited include reported attacks involving Dr. Julie Nyamao in Kisii, Linda Ogweno in Kisumu, former Governor Hon. Kawira Mwangaza in Meru and parliamentary aspirant Agneta Mwangale in Homa Bay, alongside reported gender-based intimidation in Baringo and political harassment in Nairobi.

These incidents require independent verification and investigation and raise concerns regarding the protection of women's constitutional rights under Articles 27, 28, 29, 37 and 38.

Our Call: We call upon the NPS, DCI, ODPP, IEBC, NCIC, political parties and relevant institutions to strengthen preventive security measures, investigate reported violations, ensure accountability, enforce responsible political conduct and establish coordinated early warning and response mechanisms.

Protection from electoral violence is fundamental to women's equal participation in political leadership and credible elections in 2027.

290 days to the 2027 General Elections. 🇰🇪

The women who win in 2027 are not the ones who start in 2027. They are the ones who start now, while there is still time to learn the rules, build the base and be seen.

With 290 days to go, women aspirants and leaders should be doing these things:

✅ Check your registration: Confirm your voter status and update your details. Help five other women do the same.
✅ Know the rules: Read the electoral laws, party nomination requirements and timelines, including the two-thirds gender principle.
✅ Choose your seat and your party: Decide what you are running for and understand how your party picks its candidates, before the nomination window opens.
✅ Build your team: Find a campaign manager, a finance lead, a communications lead and a circle of mentors and allies.
✅ Plan your resources: Draw up a realistic budget and a fundraising plan, and learn the spending rules.
✅ Get known where it counts: Show up consistently in community forums, women's groups, faith spaces and party meetings.
✅ Stay safe, online and offline: Plan for harassment and online abuse, document incidents and know where to report them.

Preparation is not something you finish in the last month. It is built day by day, starting now.

At Democracy Trust Fund (DTF), we continue to support women leaders and aspirants through our Running to Win programme, civic and electoral education, mentorship and strategic partnerships.

Prepare early. Be on the table. Get informed.

Which of these will you tackle this week? Tell us in the comments. 👇

The journey to 2027 is already underway, how are you preparing to participate?

As Kenya moves closer to the 2027 General Elections, the next 298 days present an important opportunity for women and young people to prepare, organize, engage and contribute to shaping the country's democratic future.
Meaningful political participation does not begin on Election Day. It starts with informed decisions, active civic engagement, leadership development and understanding democratic processes.

What should women and young people be doing now?
✅ Familiarize yourself with electoral laws, voter registration requirements and political party processes.
✅ Seek opportunities for civic education, leadership training, mentorship and networking.
✅ Participate in public consultations, policy discussions, community forums and political party activities.
✅ Understand nomination requirements, develop clear leadership priorities and build meaningful community connections.
✅ Challenge misinformation, reject political violence and encourage respectful dialogue and accountability.

At Democracy Trust Fund (DTF), we continue to support women leaders and aspirants through our Running to Win programme, civic and electoral education, mentorship and strategic partnerships. Meaningful leadership is built through consistent preparation and engagement.

#KATIBA@16 | REFLECTING ON OUR CONSTITUTIONAL JOUR

#KATIBA@16 | REFLECTING ON OUR CONSTITUTIONAL JOURNEY

Today, Democracy Trust Fund joins fellow civil society and democracy actors, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission and many others, in marking 16 years since the promulgation of Kenya’s Constitution.

Katiba @16 is a period to reflect on how far we have come as a country, the progress made in strengthening constitutionalism, democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation, while also acknowledging the bottlenecks that continue to hold us back.

For us at DTF, our reflection centres on inclusive governance and the milestones made towards equality for all. The Constitution gave Kenyans a powerful framework for participation, representation, devolution, access to rights and greater inclusion.

Over the past 16 years, we have seen important steps forward, but the promise of the Constitution is still a work in progress. The Two-Thirds Gender Rule remains an important part of this conversation. Sixteen years on, we must continue asking: Are women equally represented in the spaces where decisions are made?

As we look towards the 2027 General Elections, we must continue asking: Who is included? Whose voice is heard? And how do we ensure that governance works for every Kenyan?

Today, we celebrate the gains, confront the gaps and renew our collective commitment to a Kenya where everyone can participate, be heard and enjoy equal rights and opportunities. The people remain at the centre of Kenya’s democratic journey.

Today, Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) joins the world

Today, Democracy Trust Fund (DTF) joins the world in celebrating International Youth Day and appreciating the important role young people—both young women and young men—continue to play in shaping development and governance globally.

Locally, we celebrate the young people who are taking the lead in driving difficult conversations, challenging the status quo and contributing to the governance of our country.

As we move closer to 2027, we encourage more young people, especially young women, to step forward, build their leadership capacities and position themselves to take up leadership opportunities at all levels across the country.

Your voice matters. Your leadership matters. Your time is now.

Young Leaders. Stronger Democracy.

Yesterday, DTF had the pleasure of hosting Hon. Tiyah Galgalo at our offices for a meaningful exchange on leadership, democracy and women’s political participation especially for Isiolo County .

As the first Woman Representative of Isiolo County, Hon. Tiyah has continued to grow her political and leadership journey and is currently working as a Comissioner at Kenya Land Commission. As she develops her new political ambitions in Isiolo County, we were pleased to engage in substantive discussions and share perspectives that contribute to shaping her leadership discourse.

At DTF, we remain committed to supporting women across the country, including those navigating political spaces where negotiated democracy continues to affect women’s participation and leadership.

We believe in building bridges, sharing perspectives and creating opportunities for women to lead.
